這本書是作者為那些立心做僕人領袖的人撰寫的,也是幾年前所寫《僕人怎能領導學校:僕人領導學與教會辦學》一書的延續或補篇。所提出的十二項修煉:服務心態(servant mentality)、精誠(entheos)、預視力(foresight)、思考能力(conceptualization)、作管家(stewardship)、以建立人及醫治人為己任(commitment to grow and heal others)、以同理心聆聽及溝通(listening and communicating empathically)、勸說(persuasion)、建立及維持信任(building and maintaining trust)、建立群體(building community)、冒險精神(risk-taking)及直覺力(intuition),都是來自僕人領導學鼻祖羅伯.格林理夫(Robert Greenleaf)所提出的素質概念和論述。這本書不只希望處理領袖所修煉的素質是什麼(what),也希望讀者能同時明白它們為何對領導重要(why)、它們可以怎樣培養(how)以及可以怎樣跟進(what next)的課題,希望能成為讀者在學習服務和領導方面的一本參考書及工具書。對教育工作者來說,此書最好和《僕人怎能領導學校》一起看,可藉以探研僕人領袖如何在學校不同領導崗位中應用和發揮這些素質,令學校工作做得更好。當然,這些領袖素質應用的範圍並不局限在教育的職場,在非教育界的機構裏,也應該合適,畢竟僕人領導學的鼻祖格林理夫是來自工商企管界。不過,格林理夫也非常關心教育,特別希望大學能培養更多有志服務的學生成為僕人領袖,將來貢獻社會。-- from back cover
